Bowen before doors open: a gamer's walk around town

An hour before doors open, Bowen is at its best: low sun, working boats and a town still full of its own stories. Here is a walk that ends at the club room.

Out and about

The hour before six

Cable runs along the floor between two rows of tables in the club room

Many of us arrive early on Fridays, partly to help with the cables and partly because Bowen is a lovely place to kill an hour. The light is soft, the heat has eased, and the town has the unhurried feel of a place that knows what time of day it is.

If you're new to the area, or you've lived here for years and never taken the long way, this little route is a good way to warm up before a night at the tables.

A route that ends at the door

Start at the water

Walk down to the harbour and watch the working boats come in. Fishing crews hose down their decks, pelicans line up on the rails and the old jetty stretches out into the evening light. It is a good place to practise breathing slowly before a competitive match.

Find a mural

Bowen is known for its murals, painted across walls in the town centre and telling stories of the district's past. Pick one you haven't looked at properly. They make surprisingly good conversation openers for a newcomer who needs a topic.

Climb to the lookout

From the lookout on Flagstaff Hill the whole bay opens up, with the headlands and islands sitting in the haze. Stinger season keeps swimmers out of the water, but nothing stops you taking in the view from above.

Buy something local

In season the district's fruit and vegetables are everywhere, and half the crew arrive with a bag of whatever is ripe. Pick up something to share, and set it on the side table. It will vanish before the first tea break.

Finish on Herbert Street

Walk the last stretch along Herbert Street to number 61. By then the early crew will have the tables out, the kettle will be warming, and the quiet hour will be almost over.
